Dandong

by Jan-David Kukla, June 22nd 2017

Dandong is a great destination for a short weekend trip. My wife and I went there in June 2017. There are regular trains leaving from Shenyang Station that go directly to Dandong station. We stayed at the Hilton Garden only a few minutes walk from the train station and the Yalu riverside and the bridge connecting China with North Korea.

The Hotel has rooms with a view of the riverside, which I would recommend, as it was very interesting to see the North Korean side light up (or not) at night. The breakfast at the hotel was quite good with many western breakfast choices and there are some restaurants in the area for dinner. In the mornings and evenings there was always English speaking staff available, that also helped us find a restaurant for dinner.

Sights to see:

  • Yalu River (Chinese – North Korean border)
  • a length of the Great Wall, about 20-30 minutes drive from the city centre
  • Phoenix Mountain, about 1.5 hours drive away from the city centre
